After a long and successful coaching career at Arizona State, where the Sun Devils won an NCAA team championship in 1988, Bobby Douglas took his technical expertise to Iowa State University in 1993. During his 13-year coaching tenure in Ames, Douglas led the Cyclones to three runner-up finishes and five top-five performances at the NCAA tournament. He was also the head Olympic freestyle wrestling coach in 1992 and 2004.
As a competitor, Douglas was known for his skilled and scientific approach to wrestling. Douglas placed fourth at the 1964 Olympic Games and made the team again in 1968 but was forced to withdraw due to an injury. At the World Championships he placed second in 1966 and third in 1970. His overall career record including college and international competition was 303-17-7.
