Larry Hayes owns a unique place in the rich history of Iowa State wrestling. In 1961, after winning NCAA titles in 1959 and '60, Hayes became the first Cyclone wrestler to win three NCAA titles. Since freshman were unable to compete at the time, Hayes has the rare distinction of winning NCAA titles every year he was elible to compete. He finished his career at Iowa State with a 54-4-1 record.
While in high school, Hayes became the first state wrestling champion in school history. Wrestling for Des Moines Lincoln, he won the 138 pound title in 1957.
