A native of Davenport, Iowa, Jim Leach was a star athlete in football and wrestling and won an Iowa state high school championship in 1960 at 138 pounds. He also wrestled at Princeton University.

He was elected to the United States Congress in 1976 and has served 14 terms. He continues to be a staunch wrestling fan and supporter.
